Not for kids under 12
My 12 year old has read it and didn't get nightmares but he is has always liked those kinds of books so I recommend it for no younger then 12 but a great book for 12 year olds.As a read-aloud, children of 7-8+ would enjoy it. To read on one's own, I would recommend 10+. As far as general age appropriateness, there is no romance in here and only very mild fantasy violence. The Third Age
The Third Age is the time period in which The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are set. This age is marked by the rise of Sauron against the Númenórean kingdoms and his eventual defeat during the War of the Ring. The Fourth Age is the time period after the fall of Sauron, when Dwarves, Men, and Hobbits prosper.

Is Lord of the Rings ok for 8 year old
Beautiful, Sweeping, Epic, and Just A Bit Scary
It's a film I can't wait to share with my children but they'll have to wait for middle-school as it's just spooky enough to keep it out of the reach of the 10 and under crowd. The violence is sometimes bloody and there are swords and arrows flying every which way.
Can an 11 year old read The Hobbit : It's a great read-aloud for children as young as six or seven, but I wouldn't recommend it for kids younger than 11 or 12 to read by themselves. The Hobbit is a wonderful story because it has almost the perfect dose of every story element. The overall plot is straightforward but filled with many sub-adventures.
In addition to the violent and disturbing scenes mentioned above, this movie has some scenes that could particularly disturb children in this age group. For example: Frodo has a premonition of his town being burned to the ground by Sauron. His vision shows hobbit children and grown-ups running in fear.
Age 12+ At this age, your kids can probably handle everything J.K. Rowling sends their way, but you might want to watch the more mature movies with them. Read: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)
Is Lord of the Rings easy to read
LOTR is not a quick read. This story spans over 1,000 pages and contains a vast amount of detail. It is a book that demands your full attention, so take your time and read it at a pace that suits you. And don't speed read it–you will miss the intricate world-building, details, and nuances. With its complex world-building, intricate plot, and numerous characters, the novel can be overwhelming at first. And yes, it is technically one novel, split into three parts. It was published in three volumes originally because there were paper shortages as a result of World War II.Parents need to know that Game of Thrones (based on the novels by George R.R. Martin) is a big-budget fantasy series that frequently depicts gory, brutal battles and graphic acts of violence (including against children and women), as well as lots of nudity and sexual acts, including incest, orgies, and sexual violence …
Parents need to know that, of J.R.R. Tolkien's many excellent books, The Hobbit is the better choice for tweens. It makes a great read-aloud for kids 8 and up and read-alone for 10 or 11 and up. Kids younger than 8 will probably have a tough time with both the vocabulary and some of the violence.

Is 8 old enough for Harry Potter
Like most milestones, there is no “right age.” It all depends on the kid—and the parents. But there are a few age-related guidelines to take into consideration: From a technical standpoint, Harry Potter is categorized as a middle-grade read, which typically encompasses 9–to–12-year-olds.
At the end of the day, always consider what you think your kid can handle and use your judgement, but generally speaking, I wouldn't show this to kids under 11.To be honest, no. It's a fantastic book, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first read for a new English speaker. I wouldn't recommend it as a first Tolkien read even to an experienced English reader, you'll want to read The Hobbit first, and I would say it's a good choice, though occasionally some archaic words …
Is Lord of the Rings harder to read than Harry Potter : Tolkien's books weren't aimed at anyone – he was writing for his own pleasure. And so, he wrote it in “simple” (for him) language, which is much harder for us to understand, than Mrs. Rowling's writing for children.
