This means beginning with The Hobbit, a.k.a. The Hobbit, Or, There and Back Again. As a book intended for a broad reading audience (including younger readers), it's also fairly simple. Then read the LOTR stories starting with The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Here is the first way: The Hobbit, then The Lord of the Rings trilogy, then The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (if you like poetry), The Silmarillion, The Great Tales Trilogy (which is three books, The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien), and finally Unfinished Tales. It's a fantastic book, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first read for a new English speaker. I wouldn't recommend it as a first Tolkien read even to an experienced English reader, you'll want to read The Hobbit first, and I would say it's a good choice, though occasionally some archaic words … Yikes!
Is LOTR a hard read : However, reading The Lord of the Rings can be an intimidating task for many readers, especially those who are new to the fantasy genre or an older style of writing. With its complex world-building, intricate plot, and numerous characters, the novel can be overwhelming at first.
Can I read LOTR without reading The Hobbit
You can read LOTR without reading The Hobbit before it.
Is The Hobbit an easy read : The overall plot is straightforward but filled with many sub-adventures. Although the beginning is a bit slow, especially for younger readers, as soon as the adventure truly begins (about 40 pages in) the story moves quickly. The characters are certainly different from those in the average modern children's book.
Tim If you're planning to read both, definitely read The Hobbit first, it was written first and provides useful information. With that being said, if you only want to invest the time in reading three books and not four, you can certainly get through LOTR without issue without The Hobbit.

Which Tolkien book should I read first
The Hobbit
If you are a child of 9 then the first book should definitely be The Hobbit. Children from 11 onwards may be OK with The Lord of the Rings next, followed perhaps by the stories in Tales from the Perilous Realm. The Silmarillion is quite a dense read, and should probably be tackled a little later. The most challenging books you will ever read

Age 12. Expect more action and violence in Tolkien's books and the adaptations. Read: The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Hobbit was written before Tolkien's ambitious Lord of the Rings. While there are many references to classic lore, the bottom line is that this is a YA book. It is easy to read, and to read aloud, (something that is not the case with LOTR.

Can I skip The Hobbit and read LOTR : Avwriter Both are effectively stand alone works, and the introduction in LOTR does a good job of filling in what any reader needs to know. It really depends upon your personality and what you are after. I read the Hobbit years after reading LOTR, and found myself disappointed by the former.
Can a 13 year old read The Hobbit
I think the average age for reading aloud is 6+ and the average age for reading to yourself is 11+. It contains a few very sad deaths and my daughter nearly cried when one of the most important characters died. As well, it contains evil elves, goblins and dangerous wolves.
Even for a seasoned Tolkien fan it's not always an easy read. It IS very cool and is utterly, ridiculously thorough world-building, and there are some great stories within it, but there is nothing about it that skipping it would preclude your understanding of LOTR or the Hobbit.the Bible
With over 5 billion copies sold and distributed, the Bible takes the top spot as the most read and widely distributed book in the world. It is considered the holy scripture of Christianity and is also revered by Judaism.
What is the hardest Tolkien book to read : Some readers find the style of The Silmarillion hard to get used to. Try reading the final section, “Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age”. This summarises some of the events of The Lord of the Rings but is written in the same style as The Silmarillion.
